Work

Matthew Carey is an all-media artist drawing from points across the history of art and technology, fusing surrealist automatism and pop-art's mechanical reproduction with digital and analog processes to create works that deliver novel sensory experiences.

Carey's work grows out of a lifelong love of making things. He studied media arts and publication design, and spent thirty years in professional kitchens. All of it taught him the simple truth that what you make has to be worth something to the person you're making it for.

His practice spans video, coding, collage, painting, and assemblage, often blending these into layered works that are indifferent to definition. The connective tissue is texture. Layers, material interactions, and density of detail conspire to trap the eye with work that pulls you from across the room and then keeps you there up close.

Zeno Izen

Zeno Izen is a substituted moniker for Matthew Carey which compresses a key thesis and embeds it into nonexistent identity.
